Sports Massage is a series of techniques used to help enhance the athlete's performance, prevent overuse injuries and to help rehabilitate injuries.
Sports Massage may contribute to the athletes ability to train more often, at a higher intensity and with a lesser chance of injury and muscle soreness. The techniques used help to increase circulation, promote lymphatic circulation, increase flexibility and range of motion, relieve muscle soreness and pain.
Pre-event Sports Massage:
- helps to prevent injury
- helps warm up the muscles and increase flexibility
- stimulates the flow of blood and nutrients to the muscles
- reduces tension and readies the athlete psychologically
Post-event Sports Massage
- helps speed the athletes recovery time
- helps reduces muscle swelling, stiffness and cramping
- promotes blood flow to remove lactic acid build up
- reduces soreness and injury
Maintenance Sports Massage
- is used as part of a regular training program
- helps the athlete to keep muscles loose
- increases blood flow to the tissue
- decreases scar tissue
- helps increase flexibility
The goal of Sports Massage is to maximize athletic performance. The massage is focused on the type of activity the athlete performs.
